Peptides and Anti-Doping: The WADA and CCES Layer, Explained

"Is it legal" and "is it prohibited in sport" are different questions with different answers, policed by different systems. This page covers the second one

A compound can be entirely lawful to supply for laboratory research in Canada and still end an athletic career. The two facts are not in tension, because they come from two systems that do not reference each other.

This page covers the anti-doping system, which is the one most research suppliers say nothing about. Two systems, not one

Canadian law governs what may be supplied and for what purpose. That is the system covered in are peptides legal in Canada, and it is federal, administered under the Food and Drugs Act and enforced by Health Canada.

Anti-doping is separate and contractual. Athletes in tested sport are bound, through their sport's rules, to the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List,[1] which in Canada is administered by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.[2] Those rules apply regardless of whether a substance is lawful to buy, lawful to possess, or approved as a medicine anywhere.

The practical consequence is that "it is legal to purchase" answers a question no anti-doping process ever asks.

Where research peptide classes generally fall

WADA revises the Prohibited List annually, so any summary written on a fixed date is a snapshot rather than an authority. The current list at wada-ama.org governs, and it is the document to check rather than this page. With that stated:

  • ·Growth-hormone secretagogues and GHRH analogues. Ipamorelin, sermorelin, tesamorelin and the CJC-1295 family fall in the peptide hormones and growth factors category, which is prohibited at all times.
  • ·Repair-class peptides. TB-500 and thymosin beta-4 are named on the list. BPC-157 has no regulatory approval for human use anywhere, which brings it within the non-approved substances catch-all.
  • ·Melanocortins. Melanotan-class compounds are prohibited.
  • ·Metabolic and incretin compounds. Treatment of this class has evolved, and anyone in tested sport should verify the current position directly rather than relying on a summary.
  • ·The non-approved substances category is the one that catches almost everything else. It covers substances with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use, which describes most of a research catalogue by definition.

Strict liability, and why it changes the calculation

Anti-doping operates on strict liability: an athlete is responsible for what is found in their sample, regardless of how it got there and regardless of intent. There is no defence built on not knowing, and the analytical methods used in doping control are specifically developed to detect peptides at low concentrations in urine and blood.[3]

That combination is what makes contamination and mislabelling a career-level risk rather than an inconvenience, and it is why the substitution problem this catalogue writes about for quality reasons has a second and much sharper consequence for anyone in tested sport.

Why a research supplier publishes this
